Open Question: Core i5 or Core 2 duo Macbook pro?

I'm going off to college and I want to get the Macbook pro 15 inch core i5, but my family thinks i only want that one because it's the newer version. They think i should get the cheaper core 2 duo macbook pro. I'm always using photoshop and video editing software such as pinnacle. I watch all my tv shows and movies on my computer. I will be a biology major and i was told i would be using some specific computer programs for my science classes. The internet and itunes are open 24/7. What do you think?
